On August 31, 2025, the medieval town of Montepulciano ignites with tradition as it hosts its annual Bravìo delle Botti, organized by local Contrade and municipal authorities. As Tuscany’s summer heat cools into a crisp evening, more than 20,000 spectators line the cobbled route from Colonna del Marzocco to Piazza Grande.
This festive spectacle blends rich culture with wine heritage, as eight districts race 80‑kg barrels uphill through historic streets. In the lead-up, local wineries present their Vino Nobile and Rosso di Montepulciano at wine menus, food pairings, and dinners throughout the week. For buyers and distributors, Bravìo offers an immersive platform to network with producers, sample time-honored Tuscan reds, and discover opportunities to bring historic, high-quality Tuscan labels into international markets.
The story of Montepulciano’s districts goes back to 1373, when the town’s statute first mentioned the Palio race in honor of its patron saint, San Giovanni Decollato. Originally a horse race, the Bravìo ran until the 1600s before it was shut down for safety. In 1974, a local priest, Don Marcello Del Balio, brought it back to life—with a twist—by turning it into a race with wine barrels.
