Italy’s Wine Export and Production in 2024

Wine Production Volume in Italy

In 2024, Italy’s wine exports reached record highs in both volume and value, despite global economic challenges and the threat of trade tariffs.

Italy, already the world’s largest wine producer, was one of the few countries to record an increase in wine production in 2024. Output reached 44.1 million hectoliters, marking a 15% rise compared to 2023. However, it’s worth noting that 2023 was a relatively weak year historically, with production at just 38.31 million hectoliters. What’s truly impressive is the performance of Italian wine exports in 2024, which grew by 3.2% to 21.7 million hectoliters, with export value rising by 5.6% to €8.1 billion. This marks one of the highest export levels in history—Italy’s third-best year on record. Notably, Prosecco led the charge, with export volumes up 12% and value increasing by 9%.1

Despite headlines in the wine industry highlighting a record rebound in production, it’s important to note that Italy’s 2024 output still falls short of levels seen between 2019 and 2022, when annual production ranged between 47.5 and 49.8 million hectoliters.
